We can live in an alternative world, a world where we qualified for state, where we considered sectionals a heroic success.
We can try to live in this world. We can fight for it, do everything in our power to achieve it, but it is never guaranteed.
We can imagine this world so vividly that it’s practically real. We can savor those minutes where we were full of hesitant glory. We could just subtract one from eight, it would be so easy.
But that world was no longer ours to live in, and it stings to be here, on the other side of success.
But if we only did it for victory, where would that ever stop? Once you qualify, you want to win, once you win state, you want to qualify for nationals, and this vicious style repeats until you’re an Olympian, competing ever-still. You can never completely win. So let’s recognize our level of success, and be grateful for it. And let’s recognize that what’s more important than achievement is the commitment (and love) of the process, the team, the everyday grind. For without that, there is truly no good in doing this at all.
We still have NXR, we still have track, and most of you still have more seasons of cross.
It’s supposed to sting, and it’s okay to feel that burn, but at least recognize that we will have more opportunities, more practices together, and more goals to realize.
And personally, I am so excited to see what the team becomes. Especially you Sophomores, I am so looking forward to seeing how you guys will grow. Coming back and checking in when your seniors is gonna be so hype.
Onwards, boys. Let’s keep running.
