(yap session incoming) I am incredibly happy with this race. I ended up getting 20th overall, 5th on the sophomore team with a time of 16:49. 10th on the team.
Race prep:
Race prep for this meet was pretty normal, lots and lots of water on Friday, chugged a pickle jar worth before leaving for the buses and drank a little throughout the rest of the day. Nothing special with the warmup, dynamics got cut a little short.
1st mile:
The start was a little rough just because of how little space we had. I made the best of it and actually got out pretty fast compared to races in the past. I counted my place on the first turn thing and I was in 29th.
2nd mile:
I settled in much further ahead than at St. Charles and the quad meet, so i didn’t pass nearly as many people as I’m used to. I was very conscious to not let anyone catch me during this time. I realized keeping my place in my head wasn’t realistic but I gained a few places. At the two mile mark I was at 11:12, exactly my two mile pr from Monday.
3rd mile:
This is where the race got really hard, but I stuck with it the whole way. I passed a large pack right around the 400 mark. My 300 and 100 kicks weren’t as strong as at the quad meet, but I didn’t have anyone to pass and I had also been going much faster the whole race than at those previous races.
Overall, this race went really well. My one gripe is not getting out fast enough but that wasn’t in my control. I wished I got top 16 but I think I ran to the best of my ability.
While I had a disappointing injury in the first part of the season, I worked really hard to get to where I am and I am really proud of myself. There are more cross country meets in the season and I’m excited to keep competing.
